on the
Erie Canal
7/17/2011
For those who live in souther climes, them put these colored sticks on top of the Fire hydrants so they can find them in the deep winter snow.. brrr!
At sunset tonite three boats from Florida were on the docks

This morning we will stay at the dock.
This is what you get when you convert a bowling alley into a trinket store.

Today our crossing of lake Onedia was Kind. 21 miles of smooth waters.
Today , we will stay at Winter Harbor, where we will store the Sterling Lady this winter.
Here you can see the two very LARGE building that Winter Harbor will store our boat in , at 55 degress all winter.

The lockmaster asked us to wait in place, while this "large" tow came out of the lock. They are not used to big traffic here.
If you have ever seen Canadian Geese poopk, you will know why they hang the flags along the shoreline here.
The American Legion (of which we are members) has a $10 dock available, which we will take advantage of on our way back east on the ol erie>
Lock 24 at Baldwinsville, New York.
The city of Baldwinsville knows the value of boater. Dockage with electric, $10.
Of course we spent near $199 while we were there.

Today is going to be a long day on the ol Erie, 2 locks and 38 miles.
The Pool (the water level ) in this section of the canal was down about 2 feet.
This abandoned aquaduct was built in 1875
This is the dreded lowest bridge on the Erie, 15 ft 6 inches . We cleared it by 8 inches at normal pool
6 hours later we tied up at the free dock, with electric and water at Clyde N.Y.
And it is HOT!!!!
103 degrees. We did not walk to down today.
This picture is my entry for the Active Captain Graybeard pump contest.

THis am we are traveling 7 miles to the town of Lyons N.Y.
Is the Erie getting narrower or is it me??
Sort of like the Dismal swamp in the early moring light.
Lyons , as most towns on the Erie, offers free dockage, with electric, water and trash, and pump out. We will stay here.
All this just to attract passing cruisers.
We discovered this teriffic Pub called Growlers. Good strong Rum and cokes, and fantastic food. Don't miss this place!
New Yorks new tags are Old school.
7.23.2011
This morning before leaving, we went to the farmers market.
Some of these bridges we clear by only inches, literally!!
Twas a short run to the free docks at Newark
OF all the cruising I have done, The Erie Canal is one of the best!!
7/24/2011
On the Staight and narrow
Passed CarolynAnn at the Palmra docks.
The Fairport Yacht Club. Where's the Yachts??
The is a really nice bike path along the Erie, they even have a bike ramp from the bridge to access the path.
At our cruising speed, the bicyclist and the Joggers are faster than we travel.
It was 17 miles to Fairport free dock offering, and they were the best yet@!
Fairport is a great little tourit town, but it was Sunday, and most everything was closed.
7/24/2001
The weather today was marginal, so we stayed another day at Fairport. At happy hour, with $2.75 drinks at Shortys bar, we played video games while the Miami Marlin played the New York Yankees. We didn't dare cheer.
This was followed by a visit to this Irish Pub, where the Admiral order a plate of
French fries, smother in bacon and cheese.
about a million calories per bite.
A car show was happening in the parking lot, and yes that is the Sterling Lady in the background.
Several of these canal boats showed up tonite. You can rent one for about $3,000 a week. Unbelievable!!

So many free dock towns, so little time.
We are off at 8 am.
The Canal is Narrow, and pretty.
Aproaching Rodchester, there will be lots of bridges.
lots of narrow made made channels,
Some of the bridges had political sponcered messages.
I din't exaggerate, about the bridges.
I had to pass this anchored dredge on the one whistle, between the bridge and his port (left) side. Twas a bit tight.
